Plastering Techniques for Storehouse Doorways

Earthen storehouses have been actively constructed since the Edo period (1603-1868) as fire-resistant buildings. In addition to being vulnerable to fire, the doorways of earthen storehouses were designed to look good as the "face" of the storehouse, so highly accurate stepped interlocking, difficult finishing techniques, and decorative expressions were often used. Although these plastering techniques are of high technical value, there is a lot of information that has not been preserved in the literature because they have been handed down among craftsmen under the apprentice system, and the details of the shape and construction method of the doorway have not been recorded, and both the skills and architecture are disappearing. The purpose of this study is to elucidate the production techniques of storehouse doorsteps.
